Glowlight Tetra Care Guide (Hemigrammus erythrozonus)
Appearance and Behavior
- Coloration: The Glowlight Tetra is uniquely colored by a single, prominent, iridescent red-orange line that runs along its lateral line. This line seems to glow or shimmer under subdued aquarium lighting.
- Shoaling: They are a classic schooling fish and must be kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals. They become stressed, shy, and pale in color if kept alone.
- Activity: They are active mid-water swimmers and make an excellent contrast to other tetras (like the Cardinal or Neon) due to their unique color.
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: 15–20 gallons for a stable environment and school.
- Temperature: Tropical range: 73°–81° F (23°–27° C).
- pH Level: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water: 5.5 to 7.0. They thrive in blackwater conditions, which can be achieved by using driftwood and Indian almond leaves to add beneficial tannins and tint the water.
- Aquascape: They look their best in a dimly lit, heavily planted tank. Use a dark substrate and floating plants to diffuse the light, which maximizes the visual effect of their glowing stripe.
- Water Flow: They prefer a gentle to moderate water flow, mimicking their forest stream habitat.
Diet and Feeding
The Glowlight Tetra is an easy-to-feed omnivorous micro-predator.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or micro-pellets.
- Supplementation: A varied diet that includes protein is necessary for their vibrant color: Brine Shrimp, Daphnia, and Bloodworms (frozen or live).
- Feeding Tip: They are mid-water feeders. Feed small portions 2-3 times per day.
Compatibility
- Good Tank Mates: They are highly peaceful and non-aggressive. They mix well with other small, calm species like Neon Tetras, Corydoras catfish, Harlequin Rasboras, and Dwarf Gouramis.
- Avoid: Large, aggressive, or overly boisterous fish.
