Espei Rasbora (Lambchop Rasbora) Care Guide (Trigonostigma espei)
Appearance and Characteristics
The Espei Rasbora is one of four species in the Trigonostigma genus, all sharing a similar body shape and marking, though the Espei’s mark is narrower and more reddish-copper than the broader Harlequin Rasbora.
- Coloration: The body is a gorgeous copper-orange to deep red, with translucent fins and a reddish tail.
- Marking: Features a distinct black mark starting near the middle of the body and widening toward the tail base, resembling a lamb chop or an upward-pointing spike.
- Behavior: They are mid-water swimmers that are active but not frantic. They exhibit a peaceful, cohesive schooling behavior, which is their most attractive feature.
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons is the minimum for a small group; a 20-gallon long tank is ideal for a larger school and community setup.
- Schooling: Keep them in schools of at least 8–10 individuals. A larger group increases their confidence and brings out the best colors.
- Temperature: Tropical range: 72°–79° F (22°–26° C).
- pH Level: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water: 6.0 to 7.0. They are adaptable but thrive best in water with stable parameters.
- Aquascape: They look spectacular against a dark substrate and thrive in a heavily planted tank. Use live plants (especially broad-leafed varieties like Cryptocoryne or Anubias for spawning) and driftwood to provide cover. They prefer dim or subdued lighting.
Diet and Feeding
The Espei Rasbora is an omnivorous micro-predator with a small mouth.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or micro-pellets.
- Supplementation: Provide a varied diet that includes live or frozen micro-foods to maximize their red and copper tones: Brine Shrimp, Daphnia, and Bloodworms (finely chopped).
Compatibility
- Good Tank Mates: They are ideal for peaceful community tanks. Compatible with other small, peaceful fish like Corydoras catfish, Otocinclus, Dwarf Gouramis, and other small Rasboras/Tetras.
- Avoid: Any large, aggressive, or boisterous fish that will outcompete or intimidate them.
