Silvertip Tetra Care Guide (Hasemania nana)
Appearance and Sexual Differences
- Coloration: The body is generally silvery-yellow to copper-orange (especially the males). They have a distinct black stripe running down the tail base.
- Fins: The characteristic feature is the bright silver or white tips on their fins (dorsal, anal, and caudal lobes), which sparkle under the light. They also famously lack the adipose fin.
- Behavior: They are lively, mid-water shoalers. Males will spar with each other, but this is usually harmless and entertaining to watch.
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons for a school is highly recommended. They are active and need a tank length of at least 24–30 inches.
- Schooling: They must be kept in schools of at least 8–10 individuals. Keeping a large group disperses any territorial behavior and prevents them from becoming timid or nipping other fish.
- Temperature: Tropical range: 72°–82° F (22°–28° C).
- pH Level: Highly adaptable: 6.0 to 8.0. They are hardy and tolerate a wide range of water conditions, but soft, slightly acidic water (6.0–7.0) is ideal.
- Aquascape: Use a dark substrate to enhance the copper and silver tips. Provide a mix of dense plants (especially along the back/sides) and ample open swimming space in the center.
Diet and Feeding
The Silvertip Tetra is an easy-to-feed omnivorous micro-predator.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or micro-pellets.
- Supplementation: Provide a varied diet that includes protein-rich frozen or live foods: Brine Shrimp, Daphnia, and Bloodworms.
Compatibility
- Caution: Their activity and occasional nipping make them unsuitable for slow-moving or long-finned species.
- Good Tank Mates: Other fast, robust, and similarly sized peaceful fish (e.g., Black Neon Tetras, Corydoras, active Barbs, and Rasboras).
