The Pristella Tetra (Pristella maxillaris) is a classic and highly recommended aquarium fish, often known as the X-Ray Tetra due to its transparent, translucent body. It is renowned for its hardiness and adaptability, making it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.
Pristella Tetra (X-Ray Tetra) Care Guide
Appearance and Characteristics
The Pristella Tetra’s most distinctive feature is its translucent body, which allows the spine and internal organs to be faintly visible (the “X-Ray” effect).
- Fins: They have a distinctive pattern of yellow, black, and white stripes on the dorsal and anal fins, which contrast sharply with their silvery-yellow body and reddish tail.
- Hardiness: They are highly adaptable to a wide range of water conditions and are one of the few tetras that can tolerate a slight amount of brackish water (though this is not necessary for a typical freshwater setup).
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: A 15–20 gallon tank is ideal for a stable environment and to provide ample swimming space for a school.
- Schooling: They are active shoalers and must be kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals; they are bolder and more active in large numbers.
- Temperature: Tropical range: 72°–82° F (22°–28° C).
- pH Level: Highly adaptable: 6.0 to 7.5 (up to 8.0). They are very forgiving of water chemistry.
- Aquascape: They thrive in planted tanks and appreciate driftwood and floating plants that provide shaded areas for security. They are mid-water swimmers but will actively explore all levels.
Diet and Feeding
The Pristella Tetra is an omnivorous micro-predator that is unfussy about food.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or small pellets.
- Supplementation: Provide a varied diet including protein-rich treats to maintain health and color: Brine Shrimp, Bloodworms, and Daphnia (frozen or live).
Compatibility
This is a model community fish—peaceful and generally non-aggressive.
- Good Tank Mates: Nearly all peaceful community fish of a similar size, including Corydoras, Rasboras, Guppies, Mollies, and other small tetras.
- Avoid: Large, aggressive, or predatory fish.
