Appearance and Sexual Differences
- Short Description: A charismatic dwarf rainbowfish known for its iridescent bright blue eyes. Its body is adorned with small dark spots, and males develop colorful, extended, and fan-like dorsal and anal fins, which they “spar” with during courtship.
- Coloration: Males display iridescent yellow and blue hues over a greenish-yellow body, with vivid spots. Females are generally less colorful, exhibiting a more subdued yellow/orange blush. Both sexes have the signature blue eyes.
- Fins: The fins are often edged in yellow. The male’s dorsal and anal fins become dramatically enlarged and ornate as they mature.
- Behavior: They are active but peaceful mid-water shoalers. They are social and thrive on the presence of a large group, which reduces their natural timidness.
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons is the minimum for a small school. A larger 20-gallon tank is highly beneficial for stability and their constant activity.
- Schooling: They should be kept in schools of at least 8–10 individuals. A large group encourages vibrant color display and prevents subdominant males from being stressed by dominant ones.
- Temperature: Tropical range: 72∘–82∘F (22∘–28∘C).
- pH Level: Highly adaptable, but prefer soft, slightly acidic conditions: 4.5 to 7.5. They require clean, well-filtered, and well-oxygenated water, as they are sensitive to parameter swings.
- Aquascape: They flourish in a heavily planted tank with subdued lighting, especially enjoying the cover of floating plants to diffuse light. A darker substrate will enhance their natural coloring. Use driftwood and plants to create a secure, natural environment.
Diet and Feeding
The Gertrude Rainbowfish is a small-mouthed omnivore that prefers meaty foods.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or micro-pellets.
- Supplementation: Must be supplemented often with small, protein-rich frozen and live foods: Frozen Daphnia, Cyclops, and Baby Brine Shrimp. They prefer meaty foods for optimal health and color.
- Schedule: Feed small amounts once or twice a day. Care must be taken to ensure they are not out-competed by more aggressive or faster-eating fish due to their timid nature.
Compatibility
- Caution: They are very timid and can be out-competed for food by boisterous or aggressive eaters.
- Good Tank Mates: Other small, extremely peaceful nano-fish and invertebrates. Examples include Pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus, small Rasboras, and adult Dwarf Shrimp (they may eat shrimp fry).
