Key Characteristics of Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green’
- Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green’ (Cultivar)
- Common Name: Green Wendtii, Wendt’s Water Trumpet
- Hardiness: Easy (Very robust once established).
- Leaf Appearance: Features broad, lance-shaped leaves that are a solid, lush medium-to-dark green. The leaf edges often have a slightly ruffled or wavy margin, adding texture.
- Size & Growth: A medium-sized plant, typically forming a bushy rosette that reaches a height of 4–12 inches (10–30 cm). In open areas with low light, the leaves may grow longer and tend to lie horizontally near the substrate.
- Growth Rate: Slow to moderate.
- Nutrient Requirement: Primarily a root feeder. It performs best when planted directly into a nutrient-rich substrate (like aqua soil) or when supplemented with root tabs in inert substrates (like sand or gravel).
- Planting: Plant the roots firmly into the substrate, but do not bury the crown (the point where leaves meet roots), as this can cause the plant to rot.
- The “Melt”: Like all Cryptocoryne, it is prone to “Crypt Melt”—a temporary loss of all leaves—when exposed to sudden or drastic changes in water parameters or light. The healthy root system will typically remain intact and sprout new, adapted leaves over time.
- Placement: Excellent as a foreground or midground feature plant, providing a strong block of green color and contrast to fine-leafed or red stem plants.
