The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a fantastic and popular choice, often considered hardier and more adaptable than the standard Neon Tetra. They offer a striking contrast with their dark body and brilliant neon stripes.
Black Neon Tetra Care Guide
Tank Setup and Water Parameters
The Black Neon Tetra is more forgiving of water parameters than the Neon or Cardinal Tetra, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.
- Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons is the minimum, but 20 gallons or larger is recommended for stability and a proper school size.
- Schooling: These fish are highly social and must be kept in groups of at least 6-10 individuals. They are bolder and less stressed in larger schools.
- Temperature: Warm, tropical water: 72°–81° F (22°–27° C).
- pH Level: Adaptable, tolerating a wide range from 5.5 to 7.5. They are happy in neutral water but will display their best colors in slightly acidic water.
- Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (up to 18 dGH or more).
Habitat and Environment
Their coloring—a wide black stripe topped by a thin, iridescent blue or ivory line—is emphasized by a darker environment.
- Decor: Use dark substrate (sand or fine gravel) and a dark background. Decorate with plenty of live plants, driftwood, and roots, leaving a good amount of open space in the middle for swimming.
- Lighting: Subdued lighting is preferred and will enhance their neon stripe. Floating plants are a great way to dim the tank.
- Notes: These are active mid-to-top-dwelling fish and are known jumpers, so a secure lid is recommended.
Diet and Feeding
The Black Neon Tetra is an omnivorous fish that is not picky about food.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or micro-pellets.
- Supplementation: A varied diet ensures optimal health and coloration. Supplement with small, meaty foods:
- Frozen or live Daphnia
- Frozen or live Brine Shrimp
- Small, crushed Freeze-dried Bloodworms
- Feeding Schedule: Feed small portions 2-3 times per day, giving them what they can consume in 1-2 minutes.
Compatibility
The Black Neon Tetra is an ideal community fish, known for its peaceful nature.
- Good Tank Mates: Other small, peaceful tetras, Corydoras catfish, Rasboras, Dwarf Gourami, peaceful shrimp (though they may eat shrimplets), and other small, calm species.
- Avoid: Large, aggressive, or carnivorous fish that are big enough to eat them.
