Black Emperor Tetra Care Guide (Nematobrycon palmeri Black)
Appearance and Sexual Differences
The Black Emperor Tetra exhibits strong sexual dimorphism, making it easy to distinguish males and females.
- Males: Possess a deep, sometimes velvety satin black body and fins. Their caudal fin is elongated with a distinctive center ray that forms a “trident” shape. They have bright, metallic blue eyes.
- Females: Are generally smaller and rounder-bodied. They lack the trident tail and have metallic gold or green eyes.
- Behavior: Males will posture and flare their fins at rivals to establish dominance, which is a key part of their display and very entertaining to watch.
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons for a school is recommended. A long tank is preferable for swimming.
- Schooling: They must be kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals. A proper school reduces shyness and prevents stress.
- Temperature: Tropical range: 73°–81° F (23°–27° C).
- pH Level: Prefers soft, slightly acidic water: 5.5 to 7.5. They are hardy and can adapt, but a darker environment with tannins will maximize their color.
- Aquascape: Use a dark substrate and provide plenty of hiding spots and visual breaks with dense plants, driftwood, and leaf litter. Subdued lighting enhances their deep color and metallic eyes.
Diet and Feeding
The Black Emperor Tetra is an unfussy, omnivorous micro-predator.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or small sinking pellets.
- Supplementation: Variety is key. Feed frozen or live meaty foods regularly: Brine Shrimp, Daphnia, and Bloodworms.
Compatibility
- Good Tank Mates: Other peaceful tetras, Corydoras catfish, loaches, dwarf cichlids (Rams), and Rasboras.
- Avoid: Aggressive species or fish that are large enough to eat the Emperors.
