Key Characteristics of Anubias Congensis (Trade Name)
- Scientific Identity (Trade Confusion): The name Anubias congensis is often incorrectly applied in the hobby. It is botanically considered a synonym of Anubias heterophylla or sometimes misapplied to Anubias afzelii. In trade, it refers to the taller, narrow-leafed forms.
- Distinctive Feature: Leaves are significantly longer and narrower with a pointed tip (lanceolate or spear-like) compared to the round or broad leaves of A. barteri varieties.
- Size & Growth: A large Anubias, typically growing to a height of 8–24 inches (20–60 cm), making it one of the tallest common Anubias species. It has a slow growth rate.
- Hardiness: Extremely robust and easy to care for, even with large or aggressive fish, as its leaves are very thick and durable.
- Lighting: Low to medium light is preferred. Place it in shaded areas to reduce the risk of algae growth on its long-lasting leaves.
- Planting: It is an epiphyte. The thick, creeping rhizome must be kept exposed above the substrate. It is best attached to large pieces of wood or rockwork to create vertical interest.
- Use in Aquascaping: Recommended for midground or background placement in larger aquariums where its height and elegant leaf shape can be fully appreciated.
