Key Characteristics of Anubias Barteri var. nana ‘Paxing’
- Scientific Name: Anubias barteri var. nana ‘Paxing’ (Cultivar)
- Distinguishing Features:
- Growth Habit: Unlike other A. nana which grow vertically, ‘Paxing’ is noted for its spreading, low, horizontal habit. The rhizome creeps along the surface, making it an excellent compact ground-cover for hardscape.
- Leaf Shape: The leaves are small and narrower than the standard round/oval A. nana, often described as elliptic to broad-lanceolate with a sharp, pointed tip. The blades may also be slightly concave (cupped).
- Size & Growth: A dwarf plant, similar in overall size to A. nana, typically staying under 4 inches (10 cm) in height with small leaves (approx. 3–3.5 cm long). It is a slow grower.
- Hardiness: Extremely robust and undemanding, suitable for beginners.
- Lighting: Low to medium light is preferred. Low lighting helps control algae growth on the slow-growing leaves.
- Planting: It is an epiphyte. The rhizome must be kept exposed and should be attached (tied or glued) to rocks, driftwood, or allowed to root on the surface of the substrate.
- Use in Aquascaping: Ideal for providing fine, compact detail and low, dense coverage in the foreground or midground, particularly in nano tanks or intricate rock-wood scapes.
