Key Characteristics of Anubias Heterophylla
- Scientific Name: Anubias heterophylla
- Common Name: Congo Anubias, Variable-Leaf Anubias. (Note: The historical synonym “Anubias congensis” is often correctly classified as A. heterophylla, but is also misapplied to A. afzelii.)
- Distinguishing Feature: The name “heterophylla” means “different-leaved,” as its leaf shape is highly variable, ranging from oval/elliptic to narrow-lanceolate on the same plant. The leaves are generally long and pointed, with distinct veins.
- Size & Growth: A very large species, often reaching 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) in height in an aquarium, with long leaf stems (petioles). The “XL” variant highlights its potential to be a true centerpiece or background plant. It is a slow grower.
- Hardiness: Extremely robust and forgiving of water conditions, making it excellent for beginners, large tanks, and setups with boisterous fish.
- Lighting: Low to moderate light is sufficient. Its large, dark leaves make it prone to algae under high intensity.
- Planting: It is an epiphyte. The thick rhizome must not be buried in the substrate to prevent rot. It should be attached (tied or glued) to large pieces of wood or rock.
- Use in Aquascaping: Ideal for the background of large aquariums, or as an emergent plant in a paludarium (where it can grow even taller).
