Key Characteristics of Anubias Glabra
- Scientific Name: Anubias barteri var. glabra
- Common Name: Water Aspidistra, Lance-leaf Anubias (often incorrectly sold as A. afzelii or A. minima).
- Distinctive Feature: Its leaves are long and narrow (lance-shaped or lanceolate), unlike the heart-shaped or round leaves of the nana varieties. The leaves are smooth-edged and dark green.
- Size & Growth: A medium-to-large Anubias variety, typically reaching 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) in height, though some forms can grow taller. It is a slow grower.
- Hardiness: Extremely hardy, tolerant of wide-ranging water parameters, and an excellent beginner plant.
- Lighting: Low to medium light is preferred. It thrives well in shaded areas.
- Planting: Must be grown as an epiphyte—attached to hardscape (wood, rock) with the rhizome completely exposed. Burying the rhizome will cause it to rot.
- Use in Aquascaping: Excellent for the midground or background of an aquarium, often attached to large pieces of driftwood to simulate natural root systems.
- Variations: Several cultivars exist, including A. glabra ‘Minima’ (a smaller form) and A. glabra ‘Variegated’ (featuring white or marbled leaf patterns).
