Key Characteristics of Anubias Coffeefolia
- Scientific Name: Anubias barteri var. coffeefolia (a cultivar of A. barteri)
- Distinctive Features:
- Texture: The leaf surface is corrugated or ribbed, meaning the tissue arches significantly between the lateral leaf veins, giving it a bumpy, wavy, or “bubbled” appearance reminiscent of a coffee plant leaf.
- Color Change: New, emerging leaves are a striking reddish-brown or bronze color, which gradually changes to the characteristic deep, dark green as the leaf matures.
- Size & Growth: A medium-sized Anubias, typically reaching 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) in height. It is a slow grower.
- Hardiness: Extremely robust and very easy to care for, suitable for all skill levels. Its tough leaves are resistant to nibbling by most fish.
- Lighting: Low to moderate light is preferred. It is highly shade-tolerant.
- Planting: As an epiphyte, it must be attached (glued or tied) to hardscape (wood, rock) with the rhizome completely exposed to the water. Do not bury the rhizome.
- Use in Aquascaping: Excellent as a midground feature plant to add strong texture and color contrast, particularly when placed against smooth leaves or light-colored hardscape.
