Key Characteristics of Anubias Barteri ‘Round Coin Leaf’
- Scientific Name: Often classified as Anubias barteri ‘Coin Leaf’ or A. barteri var. nana ‘Round Leaf’.
- Distinguishing Feature: The leaves are the most unique trait—they are nearly circular or perfectly round, sometimes with a slightly heart-shaped base, resembling a coin. They are the signature thick, dark green, and leathery texture common to the genus.
- Size & Growth: A medium-sized Anubias, generally growing larger than A. nana but smaller than the base A. barteri. It typically reaches 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) in height. It is a slow grower.
- Hardiness: Extremely hardy and tolerant of a wide range of water conditions (pH 6.0–7.5; temperature 72–82°F). Excellent for beginners.
- Lighting: Low to medium light is preferred. It is important to avoid bright, direct light to minimize algae growth on the broad, slow-growing leaves.
- Planting: It is an epiphyte. The rhizome must be kept exposed and attached to hardscape (wood, rock) or allowed to rest on top of the substrate.
- Use in Aquascaping: Ideal for the midground or as a bold accent on driftwood, creating visual interest and contrast with its distinct leaf shape.
