The Albino Pristella Tetra is a color variation of the common Pristella Tetra (Pristella maxillaris), which is famously known as the X-Ray Tetra due to its translucent body. The albino variation lacks the typical dark and yellow fin markings but retains the species’ characteristic hardiness and peaceful nature.
Albino Pristella Tetra Care Guide (Pristella maxillaris Albino Variant)
Appearance and Characteristics
The Albino Pristella Tetra is unique because its albino genetics affect its pigmentation and eyes:
- Body: The body is translucent, but instead of the normal silvery sheen, it has a pale golden or yellowish body with visible internal organs (the “X-Ray” effect).
- Fins: The characteristic yellow, black, and white markings of the fins are largely absent or very faint.
- Eyes: It has distinct pink or red albino eyes.
- Hardiness: This is one of the hardiest and most adaptable tetra species, tolerant of both soft, acidic water and slightly harder, neutral water, and even trace amounts of brackish water (though this is not necessary for long-term care).
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: 15–20 gallons is ideal for a stable environment and sufficient swimming space.
- Schooling: They are strong, active shoalers and must be kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals. They become stressed and shy if kept alone or in small numbers.
- Temperature: Tropical range: 72°–82° F (22°–28° C).
- pH Level: Highly adaptable: 6.0 to 7.5 (or even 8.0). They are very forgiving of water chemistry, making them great for beginners.
Habitat and Environment
- Aquascape: They appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of open space for swimming in the middle water column. Dark substrate and driftwood will help make their subtle colors and translucent body stand out.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is fine, but they enjoy the cover provided by floating plants or tall vegetation.
Diet and Feeding
The Albino Pristella Tetra is an omnivorous micro-predator and will readily accept nearly all aquarium foods.
- Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or small pellets.
- Supplementation: A varied diet including protein is recommended for optimal health: Brine Shrimp, Bloodworms, and Daphnia (frozen or live).
Compatibility
This is one of the best and most peaceful tetras for a community tank.
- Good Tank Mates: Nearly all peaceful community fish of a similar size, including Corydoras, Rasboras, Guppies, and other small tetras.
- Avoid: Large, aggressive, or predatory fish.
